VIDA & VXDIAG VCX NANO
VIDA & VXDIAG VCX NANO on W10
Thought I would write up my experience of setting up VIDA on Windows 10, and then connecting it up and using it with a VXDIAG VCX NANO (instead of a DICE unit).
Links, resources and any credits will be listed at the end of this document.
I purchased the VXDIAG VCX NANO (Volvo designated) unit on eBay, it came in from China on the next boat, so took a few weeks. Nice box, containing the reader unit, a usb cable, and a DVD. No instructions (none on the DVD either). This unit was specified as being for Windows 7 only. The DVD contained all the files required for a VIDA 2014D installation and also a VX Manager installation. The DVD was setup to run the VIDA installation on insert (if your computer is configured to do this!)
I had previously tracked down a copy of the VIDA 2014D-RePack.ISO (6GB+) - which will allow installation on Windows 10, and the 2099 patch file - which sets the subscription date to 2099.
I carried out the installation on a fairly clean and new installation of Windows 10 Pro, on a Dell Precision M6500 (a beast of a laptop, but @ 9 years old)
Items in bold above indicate the resources you will need to complete this how to!
Let us first do what is needed to be done using the DVD that came with the device.
Insert the DVD into your computer (the machine you will be using to connect to the car)
If it autoruns and offers to install, decline this, then open Explorer and browse to the root of the DVD
In the root you should see an executable file called VX Manager.exe.
Run this by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator.
Accept everything that is asked and install the application.Once the installation is complete, you should have VX Manager in your start menu.
Now connect the VCX NANO to the usb cable and connect the other end of the cable
to a USB port on your computer. You should get a red light, some beeps, and then a
flashing blue light. Windows will hopefully silently install the usb serial driver for the VCX NANO.You may need to update the usb serial driver. Click on the start menu button and type
“device manager”. Select to open the device manager. In Device manager, scroll to
the bottom of the list on the left to USB Controllers. Click the + sign to expand the
list. You should see “USB Serial Controller/Driver”. Right click on this and select
Update Driver. Select to get the latest driver from the internet, and if there is a newer
driver, accept the defaults to install it. Once complete you can now close the Device Manager.Back to the Start Menu, find VX Manager and click it to open the program.
The program should open to “Information” showing you details about the device,
which you can see on the box or on the device label.
On the main screen find the Update button, click on it, and update the program to its latest version. You will need to restart the program. (this changed on versions so not visible in images)
At some point you may be asked to select which softwares you need from a check
list. Select “PassThru” and “Volvo Vida” by ticking the checkboxes, and click OK.In the Icon Menu at the top, select Diagnostics. You should now see two boxes
“PassThru” and “Volvo Vida”. You will follow the same procedure for each of these
when you click on the boxes. This sets up the VCX NANO to talk to VIDA.Click a box
Click Install
Done
Return to Information
Select Firmware from the boxes on the right, and look for updates. If an update is available install it.
If all that has gone well, you can now close down VX Manager (you should not need to go there again…..) and remove the VCX NANO.
Head back to Explorer and browse the DVD to \3PP\Products\dotNetFramework\.
Right click on the file dotnetfx35.exe and Run As Administrator. This needs to be
installed so do what has to be done to install this, even if you have a later version of
the framework on your computer. Vida will not work without this 3.5 framework. You can now close Explorer and eject the DVD
Now would be a good time to reboot your computer
Now we need to install VIDA. The first thing we need to do is get the rePack ISO to the computer you will be using. I suggest using a +10GB usb flash drive or portable HDD drive + 10GB. You will also need a software that can open the ISO so that you can extract the files. I am assuming you have all this stored on a separate device.
Create a folder called “repack” on your portable USB device
Extract all the files in the ISO to the folder “repack”
Also copy the 2099.exe patch file to the “repack” folder
Connect the usb portable drive to the computer (the one you want to install VIDA on)
Open Explorer and browse to the portable USB drive root
Installing VIDA
Browse to root of the folder rePack
You will see some scripts ending with the extension .cmd. You need to run these in a specific order.
To run the scripts you just need to double click on them. Run As Administrator if offered.
At some point you will be asked the type of VIDA you want to install
You want “Vida All-In-One” and the type of network is “Internet”At some point when running these scripts you will/may get a popup with a Java Firewall Exception.
You want to allow this.At some point when running these scripts you will/may get a popup telling you
about the “Success” of things in Vida (all will say Success except for the
eScheduler. Just click on Save then on Close. At some point you may be asked to restart the computer. Select Later
(do not restart until in the correct point in the procedure)
Run 1_SQL.cmd
Run 2_VIDA.cmd
Run 3_patch.cmd
Now find the file: 2014A-B-D-2099.exe, right click and select Run As Administrator
########################!! DO NOT RUN SCRIPT 5 !!
########################Reboot the computer
Wait a while after rebooting for everything to settle, and for any popups to appear if they haven’t already..
Look in your taskbar tray for the VIDA Monitor icon.
This should have a small GREEN arrow on it
If you have got this far, then you are now ready to run VIDA for the first time. The procedure I have used with my car is as follows:
Get computer running
Plug the VCX NANO into the OBDII port
Plug the usb cable into the computer
Start the car (you can just turn ignition to position II, but you may be a while,
so to save your battery it is better to burn some fuel initially)From the Start Menu, find Vida All In One and click it
Vida will open to a login in screen
User = admin, then press Enter or click Login
Once Vida is running, Click on Select Vehicle Profile, this will take you to the next screen
Towards the top left of the window you will see a device drop down. This should/must say: VXDIAG
Below this click “READ VEHICLE”
Vida will then read the vehicle, all the ECUs and return your VIN, Model and Engine details. You may need to select the gearbox type and steering side, then Click on OK
You should see the DIAGNOSTICS tab along the top become enabled
Click on DIAGNOSTICS then click on VEHICLE COMMUNICATION
On the right you should see a graphic showing:
CONNECTED(should be in green), battery state and key positionOn the left you should see a schematic of the car with the ECUs for your car in GREEN.
!Important! Wherever you see this schematic in VIDA: to select an ECU - RIGHT CLICK on the desired little green box
This should get you going!
EWD - Electrical Wiring Diagrams
On a revisit to the thread on MatthewsVolvoSite, Richard Hale Parker has recently posted another ISO file containing the EWD with a magnet torrent link (the file is 4.3GB)
Download this file, on completion, unzip/extract to a folder of your choice. In the root of this folder you will find an html file called "start.html". Open this with your browser, then follow the instructions to view the wiring diagrams for your vehicle.
